Introduction
You’ll find Q Theatre nestled at 305 Queen Street, within Auckland’s vibrant Aotea Arts Precinct. As a professionally managed, flexible, and contemporary venue, Q offers an ideal setting for conferences, launches, award ceremonies, graduations, corporate gatherings, screenings and more.
Throughout the year, Q welcomes a diverse range of bookings and hirers – from major arts organisations and independent producers to business groups and local enterprises.
Q’s History:
Q Theatre’s story began in 1996, when the closure of Auckland’s Watershed Theatre triggered the need for a purpose-built theatre space. Discussions began and led to the formation of the New Theatre Initiative, including Governor-General Dame Cath Tizard, Roger Hall, Lucy Lawless, and long-standing Q patrons Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward-Lealand.
A potential site at 305 Queen Street was identified (previously a no-deposit piano store, a garage, and a Citizens Advice Bureau), and the project was set into motion. Thanks to the New Theatre Initiative and the support of funders, Q opened to the public in 2011, a space owned and operated by the community, with strong cultural stewardship at its core.
