Waihorotiu

Māori translation: stream of Horotiu

In Māori mythology, Waihorotiu is the home of Horotiu, a taniwha or local nature spirit. It was also called the ‘Queen Street River’ as it once ran down the Queen Street gully in the Auckland City Centre into the Waitematā Harbour. The bespoke carpet design surrounding the Waihorotiu Rooms was inspired by the swamp Flora and Fauna that once existed at the site of Aotea Square.
