Auckland Conventions, Venues and Events (ACVE), part of the Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU) whānau, is a proud custodian of New Zealand’s largest collection of 13 celebrated venues.

The Climate Change and Sustainability Framework outlines the main environmental pillars of TAU’S Climate Change and Environment Strategic Plan, addressing the action plans and new initiatives.

Last month, we explored Climate Resilience initiatives, including a site-specific adaptation plan developed for one of our venues.

This month, discover how TAU's Net Zero Emissions initiatives are driving sustainable change across ACVE venues.

Net Zero Emissions

TAU is committed to halving operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

The increase in extreme weather events, driven by GHG emissions, underlines the urgency of climate action.

Case Study:Auckland Art Gallery Decarbonisation project

In November 2023, Auckland Art Gallery completed a major decarbonisation project, transitioning from a gas-fired heating system to efficient electric heat pumps.

The first phase saw the installation of three water-sourced heat pumps, replacing gas boilers — previously the Gallery’s largest source of CO₂e emissions. This innovative solution captures and reuses waste heat from existing chillers, maintaining the precise heating and humidity levels required to protect priceless artworks.

Initial results in the first three months of operation were striking:

  • 99% reduction in natural gas consumption
  • 22% decrease in overall energy use

The next project phase will focus on performance optimisation through smart metering, ensuring the system runs at peak efficiency and delivers long-term savings.

This initiative not only contributes significantly to TAU’s climate goals but also serves as a model for decarbonisation across Aotearoa’s cultural institutions. The Auckland Art Gallery, TAU’s highest energy-consuming venue, was selected to lead the transition — underscoring TAU’s wider commitment to phasing out natural gas across its portfolio. The project also supports Auckland Council’s Climate Plan, which targets a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030.

Case Study:Auckland Zoo bike parking

TAU is also working to empower the public to choose lower-emission transport options when visiting its venues, events, and experiences — contributing to Auckland’s regional climate goals.

At Auckland Zoo, one of ACVE’s celebrated venues, bike parking facilities have been introduced to encourage more sustainable travel. Located just outside the entrance, the area accommodates 24 bicycles and includes space for cargo bikes and trailers, bike tools, and lighting for safety during early morning and evening visits. The nearby Te Wai Ōrea / Western Springs cycle trail makes cycling to the zoo an even more accessible and appealing option.

Toitū CarbonReduce Certified

Did you know that all ACVE venues have been Toitū CarbonReduce certified since 2019 - recognising TAU’s commitment to actively identifying, managing, and reducing the environmental impact of its operations.

Toitū CarbonReduce empowers organisations to cut GHG emissions over time by aligning with science-based targets and implementing strategic action plans. Through rigorous measurement and continuous improvement, we are supported in managing and reducing our carbon footprint.
