Auckland Conventions, Venues and Events (ACVE), part of the Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU) whānau, is a proud custodian of New Zealand’s largest collection of thirteen celebrated venues.
ACVE and TAU work with partners to drive business growth, support key industries, attract events, and establish Auckland as a premier destination for business events. As part of TAU, New Zealand’s largest conventions operator, ACVE provides unique venues while supporting sustainability initiatives.
Last month, we discussed the Zero Waste initiatives and their growing impact across our operations.
This month, we explore the final environmental pillar of TAU’s Climate Change and Environment Strategic Plan, Responsible Water Use.

TAU seeks to protect and conserve freshwater resources by minimising water consumption in our operational activities to ensure long-term water resilience.
Responsible water use is essential for the wellbeing of both people and the planet - especially as we face more extreme weather events due to climate change. By using water efficiently and reducing waste, TAU can help protect this precious taonga (treasure) and strengthen our resilience for the future.
TAU has a water efficiency plan in place by 2026 with below objectives;
- Building a more accurate picture of water use across the venues: This consists of understanding current usage and developing baselines using increased metering and audits.
- Improving water efficiency across all venues: This objective consists of developing a water efficiency plan with targets and undertaking feasibility and cost assessments for water efficiency initiatives.
In 2023/24, TAU increased oversight and audits to provide the below picture of its water consumption profile. Building on the first objective, TAU will establish baseline water usage across its venues - taking into account each site's size, capacity, and function - and will monitor ongoing consumption to identify variances, potential leaks, and usage trends.

TAU has a clear understanding of its water use and where it sources water from. The organisation is a responsible consumer and has efficient systems in place across ACVE venues. The data collected through audits supports the second objective and the goal of developing a water efficiency plan by 2026.
By analysing water demand during large events and functions, TAU can ensure its venues have adequate capacity and explore alternative, sustainable sources for non-potable water use.
Collectively, these initiatives position ACVE venues, part of the TAU whānau, on a clear pathway to becoming responsible water users.
